Top Picks: Best Business Schools With Reasonable MBA Program GMAT Waiver Policies

January 15, 2021 8:23 pm0 commentsViews: 10541

MBA Badge GMAT Reasonable PoliciesThere are some 1000 MBA programs in the United States, and none of them are particularly easy to get into. And that’s a good thing: high standards make for a strong education and a better all around student experience.

You’ll always get the best results from surrounding yourself with the best people. If you were training for a 5K mud run, you’d want the most ambitious athletes by your side in the gym. Going back to school to earn your MBA is no different. You want to be surrounded by the best and the brightest – people who will both support and challenge you to get to the top of your game.

Are Testing Requirements For MBA Programs Really Necessary?

You’ve probably never heard anybody profess their love for standardized testing requirements – me neither. Nobody likes them, and as it turns out, they’re not nearly as effective as once believed.

Still, business schools have been slow to give up the GMAT, a computerized, adaptive test that has been the gold standard for business program admissions since the 1950s. Few things remain relevant after 70 years, so even in the most stalwart institutes of business education, things are starting to change.

It’s an intimidating test that costs more than $200 and takes more than 3 hours to complete. Your score is good for only five years, after which you will have to re-take the exam if you’re exploring further graduate study. Not only is it expensive and inconvenient, recent research suggests it’s not even a good tool for predicting the best MBA candidates.

The good news is that plenty of top-ranked schools recognize that there are many other more relevant things to consider when vetting program applicants, and reserve the GMAT requirement only for applicants they believe to be promising, but who may not have the professional background and academic track record to prove it. These schools are offering GMAT waivers qualifications that are easy to meet for anybody with a little professional experience and a decent undergrad GPA under their belt.

Nuts and Bolts of GMAT Waivers: Undergrad GPA and Professional Work Experience

These schools have figured out what a lot of students already know: a single one-time test score doesn’t really sum up your potential as either a student or a businessperson. Diversity is a watchword in modern academia, and diversity requires looking at individual’s and their experiences holistically.

These top-ranked MBA programs have actually come to realize that just letting in everyone with a 500 GMAT or better is causing them to miss out on some of the best candidates. Similarly, we want to make sure prospective MBA students looking to get into a program without having to take the GMAT are aware of all their options, and aren’t just looking at the schools that advertise no entrance exam requirements.

The schools we feature here still list the test on their application requirements, but also publish a set of requirements that can qualify you for a GMAT waiver. These requirements aren’t a new set of hoops you’ll need to jump through; instead these are qualifications you’ve likely already met by simply being someone who took their undergrad studies and first years in the workforce seriously.

These requirements vary widely, with some schools only dropping the GMAT requirement if you’ve already earned a master’s degree, or if you have a decade of business experience under your belt. Although those are great reasons to waive the test, we’ve restricted our list to schools with waiver options that are a little easier to meet.

Most of the schools on our list will offer a waiver option to applicants with a certain minimum undergraduate GPA earned through a bachelor’s program at a qualified institution. The exact GPA varies somewhat by school, but the idea is the same: if an applicant was committed to performing well as an undergrad, there’s very good reason to believe they’d do the same as a graduate student.

Along with your undergrad GPA, other significant points these business schools may consider include the accreditation of the institution you earned your bachelor’s through, how recently you earned the credits used to calculate your GPA, and the types of courses you took.

And, of course, these schools are also willing to look at your professional experience or other graduate work if you happen to have that as well.

It’s About The Whole Package, Not Just One Aspect Of Your Application

Just because a waiver is available doesn’t mean it’s automatic, however. You can think of these conditions as a way to get your foot in the door. Every school reserves the right to consider your application in its entirety. The GMAT waiver factors cited here will be weighed in consideration with the other elements of your application and you may or may not be required to take the test regardless of whether or not you technically meet the waiver requirements.

Accreditation Is Key At Every Stage

Just because you’d like to get the GMAT waived doesn’t mean you want a school with low standards, of course. You still want qualified instructors, cutting-edge curriculum, and whip-smart classmates. So that means you want an MBA program that still has a specialty business accreditation to validate all those educational aspects and more.

We only considered schools accredited by one of the three major international specialty business accreditation agencies:

  • AACSB – Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (accredits the entire business school)
  • IACBE – International Accreditation Council for Business Education (accredits individual MBAs and other business programs)
  • ACBSP – Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (accredits individual MBAs and other business programs)

You’ll find that accreditation is also an important consideration when applying for a waiver. Almost every school that uses undergrad GPA and other academic requirements to establish waiver qualifications also requires that you have met those qualifications at an accredited institution.

In most cases, that’s pretty much a given since any four-year school operating in the U.S. would be shuttered quick if they didn’t hold general regional accreditation offered by one of the six regional agencies recognized by the U.S, Department of Education (USDE), or in the case of schools that primarily offer their programs online, national accreditation through a USDE-recognized agency.

In some cases, the GMAT waiver might depend on whether or not your undergraduate degree was accredited by a specialty accreditor, not just whether the school holds basic regional or national accreditation.

In most of these cases, that means one of the three specialty business accreditation agencies named above, though some schools consider qualifying credits or degrees accredited by other specialty agencies such as ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), in the case of an applied science degree, for example.

Top Picks for the Best MBA Programs with Easy GMAT Waiver Policies

By restricting our list to only specialty accredited business schools and MBA programs, you can be sure that all the options shown here meet all the high-level qualifications that American businesses demand from MBA-educated professionals.

If you have a solid record of performance in your bachelor’s program, and don’t want to spend your time studying for and taking a standardized test, then you can apply to any of these schools with a good chance of getting in and realizing your dream, but with a lot less hassle.

This list features programs that our editorial staff hand selected to present as top recommendations. We believe the many aspects of a program that come together to create an exceptional student experience can’t be reduced to numbers alone, so no formula was used to attempt to score or rank these programs. Instead, they represent our top picks based on a thoughtful review of the things we know mean the most to students. Each one of these programs offers something unique, and all come equally highly recommended. We stand behind the principal of editorial integrity and make these recommendations independently and without compensation.
